Which pianos work with PianoLeap?

Any digital piano or keyboard that sends MIDI over USB or Bluetooth. You can also play an acoustic piano through the microphone, or use the on-screen keys.

How do I connect a digital piano?
  1. USB on a Mac: plug the piano in. It appears in Settings under Piano connection.
  2. USB on an iPhone or iPad: use Apple's USB camera adapter (or a USB-C cable on iPads with USB-C), then connect the piano.
  3. Bluetooth on an iPhone or iPad: switch the piano's Bluetooth on, then in PianoLeap choose Settings, Piano connection, Pair a Bluetooth piano.
  4. Bluetooth on a Mac: pair the piano first in Audio MIDI Setup (Window, Show MIDI Studio, Bluetooth), then it appears in PianoLeap.

In Settings, Piano connection, set Input to MIDI. When the piano is connected, its own speakers play the sound.

My piano is connected but nothing lights up or I hear nothing.
  • Check that Input is set to MIDI in Settings, Piano connection.
  • Tap Rescan devices, then Play test sound.
  • Use a USB cable that carries data (some are charge-only), and make sure the piano is switched on.
  • If you hear the notes twice, or not at all, check "Send sound to" and "Also play my piano keys on this device" in the same section.
  • On a Bluetooth piano, switch Bluetooth off and on again, and pair again.
How does the microphone work?

In Settings, Piano connection, set Input to Microphone and tap "Check and calibrate". PianoLeap asks to use the microphone, then asks you to play a few keys so it can learn your piano and room.

  • Put your phone, tablet or Mac a little closer to the piano, in a fairly quiet room.
  • Headphones are fine: PianoLeap hears the piano, not its own sound.
  • The sound is analysed on your device as you play and never sent anywhere. It is only kept if you record a take, and then only on your device. See the privacy policy.
  • If you said no by mistake, turn Microphone back on in your device's Settings (on a Mac: System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone).
I don't have a piano with me.

Tap the on-screen keys. On a Mac you can also use your computer keyboard: A S D F G H J K are the white keys, W E T Y U the black keys, and Z and X change octave.

What is free, and what does the Full Course include?

Free: Level 1 of the course, daily practice for the notes you have learned, a selection of songs, and one piece of your own sheet music with every feature.

Full Course: Levels 1 to 4, every song and classic, First Look, and as many imported pieces as you like. It is a single purchase, with no subscription.

How do I restore my purchase or use it on another device?

Open Settings and tap Restore Purchases, signed in with the Apple ID you bought with. One purchase covers your iPad, iPhone and Mac. With Family Sharing on, your family can use it too.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds are too. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose Report a Problem next to PianoLeap.

What are the hints, and how do I change them?

The glowing line or space, the lit keys, the note letters and the fingering numbers all help your eyes at first. By default they fade as you learn each note, bar by bar in songs, so you end up reading the music itself.

Settings, Seeing the notes, lets you turn each one on or off. "Fade aids as I master each note" controls the fading, and "Keep all hints on" keeps them for good. Fingering has its own choice under Practice.

What are the levels?
  • Level 1, First notes: five-finger tunes, one hand or both
  • Level 2, Both hands: the hand moves, and the left hand joins in
  • Level 3, Whole pieces: longer pieces with a simple left hand
  • Level 4, With feeling: wider leaps, new keys and a lilting 6/8

Each level ends with a recital, a few pieces played through in your own time. Already play a little? Tap "Find my level" in Lessons, or play a unit's piece at full speed and the unit counts as done. You can always play anything in any order.

Can I add my own sheet music?

Yes, as MusicXML (.musicxml, .xml or .mxl files). MuseScore exports them, and many free scores come that way from sites like IMSLP. PDFs can't be imported. The free version lets you add one piece with every feature, and the Full Course lets you add as many as you like.

Does my progress sync between devices?

If you are signed in to iCloud, your progress and settings sync between your Mac, iPad and iPhone through your private iCloud. Imported pieces and saved takes stay on the device they were made on.

How do I change the teacher's voice, or turn it off?

Settings, Voice. Choose Clara or Leo, or switch off each kind of speech separately.

How do I delete a recording of myself (a take)?

In a song, open Your takes and swipe a take, or choose Delete. Takes are stored only on your device.
